An alternator is part of a vehicle’s charging system and produces electricity for many devices. A type of generator, the alternator transforms mechanical energy into electrical energy. It provides power to essential parts of the vehicle such as the engine fan, ignition coils, radio, air conditioning system and various parts of the fuel injection system. Although the vehicle’s battery supplies some electricity, most of the electrical mechanisms require the alternator’s steady stream of power.
